On Monday afternoon, the NHL chose to suspend San Jose Sharks forward
Evander Kane for 21 games for violation of the leagues COVID-19 protocols. Shortly after the suspension, the NHLPA released the following statement on behalf of Kane.
«I would like to apologize to my teammates, the San Jose Sharks organization, and all Sharks fans for violating the NHL COVID protocols. I made a mistake, one I sincerely regret and take responsibility for. During my suspension, I will continue to participate in counseling to help me make better decisions in the future. When my suspension is over, I plan to return to the ice with great effort, determination, and love for the game of hockey.»
For those who may have missed it, the NHL launched an investigation into Kane roughly two weeks ago after reports surfaced that he had used a fake COVID-19 vaccination card. The NHL also announced that their investigation into allegations of domestic abuse made by his estranged wife could not be substantiated, and they will not be commenting further on the matter.
Kane, 30, has been in headlines all year long for a number of different altercations. There have also been reports that his teammates in San Jose have grown tired of his act and would prefer he were not apart of the team moving forward, so it will be interesting to see what happens when his suspension is completed. He still has four more seasons on a contract that carries a cap hit of $7 million.
