Steve Yzerman's front office could take a new direction while Todd McLellan remains responsible for pushing Detroit back into the playoffs.

Ansar Khan believes Detroit's ownership may target candidates with a strong analytics background during its management search.

He pointed toward Carolina's assistant general manager as a possible shortlist candidate, connecting the Red Wings to an executive shaped inside one of the NHL's most data-driven organizations.

That would represent more than a new voice in the front office. It could change how Detroit evaluates trades, contracts, deployment and roster value.

The Red Wings finished 41-31-10 with 92 points last season. They stayed outside the playoff field after another late push failed to produce the required result.

Detroit also closed 2-6-2 over its final 10 games. That finish increased the pressure on every level of an organization still waiting for its rebuild to become a playoff team.

" Ansar Khan: Re Red Wings management search: I wouldn't be surprised if Chris Ilitch in his interview process seeks out...guys who are big on analytics; the assistant GM in Carolina, Tyler Dellow...I wouldn't be surprised if he's on their shortlist - Jason Gregor Show (7/15) "

The Red Wings' next general manager could already be on the radar

Carolina's management group has built its reputation around finding value, controlling costs and using deeper performance data to support personnel decisions.

Bringing that type of thinking to Detroit could give the organization a sharper method for judging players beyond goals, assists and traditional scouting reports.

It wouldn't mean replacing scouts with spreadsheets. The stronger front offices combine video, live viewings, medical information and analytics before committing major money or trade assets.

McLellan would also feel the impact behind the bench. An analytics-focused executive could influence line combinations, matchup planning, controlled entries and how Detroit distributes minutes across its blue line.

The Red Wings allowed 258 goals and finished with a -17 goal differential. Those results show why management must examine more than offensive talent when shaping the next roster.

Detroit's ownership must now decide whether continuity remains the best path or whether the club needs a different process at the top.

Khan didn't report that a hire was close. His point was that an analytics-heavy candidate could surface during interviews, giving the search a clear and modern direction.

For a franchise that has spent years waiting on its young core, the next management choice can't be cosmetic. It must produce better decisions, better roster balance and a team McLellan can finally push across the playoff line.
