Adam Fantilli has put Rick Bowness and the Columbus Blue Jackets at the centre of a high-stakes contract negotiation.
Fantilli hasn't publicly demanded more than $14,000,000 per season. But recent offer-sheet activity has changed the market around young first-line centres.
The 21-year-old remains unsigned after producing 24 goals and 59 points across 82 games last season.
His underlying results strengthened his case. Fantilli posted a 52% expected-goal share while handling a leading role in Columbus.
The Blue Jackets currently have about $23,270,000 in projected cap space, but that total doesn't account for every unfinished contract.
Jet Greaves and Cole Sillinger have filed for arbitration. Their projected deals could remove a combined $8,500,000 from the available room.

If Adam Fantilli and the Blue Jackets fail to reach an agreement, several teams could quickly emerge as serious contenders. The Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, New Jersey Devils, and Pittsburgh Penguins all have reasons to explore adding a young franchise centre.
Chicago continues to build around Connor Bedard, while New Jersey remains aggressive in its pursuit of elite talent. Pittsburgh could view Fantilli as a long-term successor down the middle, and Winnipeg has the assets to make a major push.
The Rangers are another team to watch closely, especially if they look to make a significant splash after an underwhelming season. At just 21 years old, Fantilli would instantly become one of the most coveted players available if contract talks were to break down.
For now, Columbus remains the favorite to keep him. But if negotiations take an unexpected turn, there won't be a shortage of teams lining up for one of the NHL's brightest young stars.
Adam Fantilli's next contract could reshape the Blue Jackets' future
That scenario would leave Don Waddell with roughly $14,770,000 before signing Fantilli, creating a tight squeeze if negotiations move toward the reported range.
A $14,000,000 cap hit would consume almost all of that space. Columbus could still make trades or roster adjustments to create more flexibility.
There's no confirmation that Fantilli intends to sign an offer sheet. The possibility gives his representatives leverage without requiring him to leave the Blue Jackets.
Any rival offer above $11,939,166 would carry compensation of 4 first-round picks if Columbus declined to match.
That price should limit the number of serious suitors. A club would need the cap space, the required picks and Fantilli's agreement before applying real pressure.
Columbus also must decide whether to pursue a long-term deal or reduce the immediate cost through a bridge contract. Waiting could make the next negotiation even more expensive.
Fantilli has recorded 140 points over 213 career games. The Blue Jackets are negotiating around future top-line value, not only his current production.
The safest outcome is keeping Fantilli on terms that preserve enough room to support him. Losing their young centre over a contract gap would create a far larger roster problem.
Should Columbus give Adam Fantilli more than $14,000,000 per season?
