Connor Hellebuyck remains with Scott Arniel's Winnipeg Jets as management waits for a trade package strong enough to reshape the roster.
David Pagnotta reports that Buffalo or another interested club could enter the picture, but Winnipeg isn't prepared to move its starting goaltender simply to complete a deal.
That stance reflects the Jets' larger problem. Their roster still has holes, and trading Hellebuyck without filling several of them would leave Arniel with an even tougher assignment.
The return must do more than replace a star in the crease. Winnipeg needs pieces that can strengthen its lineup now rather than a collection built entirely around distant potential.
Buffalo stands out as a possible destination, but Pagnotta didn't describe a completed framework or suggest that an agreement is close.
That leaves Kevin Cheveldayoff in control of the timeline. The general manager can listen without lowering his demand simply because Hellebuyck's name is circulating.

Moving a goaltender of Hellebuyck's stature would change the Jets' identity overnight. It would also create immediate pressure to find a dependable answer for the crease.
That's why a package built around secondary assets won't work. Winnipeg needs a return that directly addresses its roster weaknesses and gives Arniel players he can trust immediately.
The Sabres may have the young talent and depth to make a serious pitch. But interest alone won't move negotiations unless Buffalo is ready to surrender pieces Winnipeg actually values.
Other teams could also enter once their own goaltending plans become clearer. Cheveldayoff has every reason to let the market develop rather than accept the first respectable proposal.
There's risk in waiting, especially if interested clubs turn toward cheaper options. But the greater risk would be moving Hellebuyck and discovering that the return failed to improve the Jets.
Pagnotta's message was direct: Winnipeg will hold its position until management sees a package it can live with. That could extend the uncertainty deep into the offseason.
The next move belongs to the buyers. Unless Buffalo or another club arrives with an offer that fixes more than one problem, Hellebuyck stays and the Jets keep searching for upgrades around him.
