While most were both thinking and hoping COVID-19 would soon be in the rear-view mirror, that appears not to be the case.

According to Michael Russo of The Athletic, the NHL sent a memo to all clubs this week prohibiting all organized corporate, community and charitable interactions with fans. This includes but is not limited to handshake lines, fist bumps, autograph sessions, and speaking engagements.

Russo went on to mention that the NHL and NHLPA will continue to monitor vaccination rates as well as a surge in variants as the offseason progresses to determine if a change is needed as camp approaches. He also reported that any and all media must be vaccinated and also wear masks during interaction with any club personnel.

This is certainly unfortunate news given that we seemed to be headed in the right direction regarding COVID-19 in recent months. However, from the NHL's standpoint, you can't be too careful, and they are trying to do the best they can to protect their players as well as the fans. The NHL made a similar move at the beginning of the pandemic to ensure players stayed safe.
