Brendan Gallagher's agent went public today, and the Montreal Canadiens suddenly have a decision to make.

Gerry Johansson, president and CEO of The Sports Corporation, told the Donnie & Dhali show that Vancouver has interest in acquiring his client.

"I do think it's on their desk and they do have interest," Johansson said.

That's not a rumor planted by a media member. That's the agent talking, which means this conversation is real.

Gallagher is 34 years old and carries a $6.5 million cap hit. He played 77 games this season, posting 7 goals and 23 points.

The Canadiens finished 48-24-10, good for 106 points and sixth overall. They have a core to protect and a cap structure to manage.

Why Vancouver pursuing Gallagher tells you everything about their rebuild

The Canucks finished 25-49-8 with a -100 goal differential. Dead last in the league.

Manny Malhotra is now the coach of a team that went 25 and 49. That's not a rebuild, that's a renovation of a renovation.

So where does Gallagher fit in this picture? Realistically, you're talking about a veteran presence, a character guy, maybe a short-term bridge for a young room that just had one of the ugliest seasons in franchise history.

But here's the honest question: do the Canadiens gain anything by moving him now?

Kent Hughes has run a deliberate, patient rebuild. He's not going to dump a $6.5 million winger for cap relief in a vacuum. He needs value back.

Gallagher went without an assist over his last 10 regular-season games. Two goals, zero helpers. His offensive production has dropped every year.

At 34, the market for him is narrow. Vancouver appears to be one of the few teams raising their hand.

The Canadiens don't have to move him. But if Johansson is making calls and dropping names on afternoon radio, the situation has an expiry date.

Whether Hughes bites is another story entirely.
