While there's been no official announcement of his retirement, Michael Ferland has accepted a position outside of the NHL. Ferland, who had been trying to make a comeback to the league after suffering multiple concussions, recently admitted that his NHL career was likely over, and that appears to be the case after it was announced that he's accepted a position as On-Ice Development Coach with the Western Canada Hockey Academy.

Ferland still has two seasons remaining on his contract with the Vancouver Canucks at a cap hit of $3.5 million annually. Of course, that won't count if he officially retires or remains on LTIR.

"I'm not even anywhere close to coming back," The 29-year-old recently told The Athletic. "I'm just trying to get back healthy. I am feeling better, I wish I could come back, but I know where I'm at now health-wise."

"It's a tough decision for me, but no, I don't think I'll play professionally ever again. Definitely no contact ever again, I need to take care of myself."

Ferland tried to make a comeback from multiple concussions on a few occasions during the 2019-20 season - once in December, once in February and again in the bubble in July and August - but couldn't make a go of it and had trouble even finishing games that he was taking part in.

Ferland played a total of 335 games throughout his NHL career with Calgary, Carolina and Vancouver. The forward recorded 60 goals and 134 points.
