They certainly seem like a team that would make sense given that they are really on the rise right now and have plenty of young roster players as well as prospects that they could potentially move for him. However, according to well known Rangers reporter Larry Brooks, the team has never been very interested in the 24-year-old superstar.
Brooks sent out a Tweet on Friday saying that Rangers general manager Chris Drury has been telling agents this week that he has never been seriously interested in acquiring Eichel. This is certainly shocking given all the reports over the past few months that made it sound as though the Rangers were heavily involved.
If this is the case, it would seem the two front runners for landing Eichel are the Anaheim Ducks and the L.A. Kings, though the Vegas Golden Knights also remain a distant possibility. Unfortunately for the Sabres, it sounds as though their asks in a return are being scoffed at as of now, meaning they may eventually be forced to trade their disgruntled centerman for a somewhat underwhelming return. This will be a fascinating story to continue watch unfold as the summer progresses.
