On Thursday morning, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced that Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin has been fined $5,000 for spearing Boston Bruins forward Trent Frederic.

The incident occurred in the third period of Wednesday night's shootout win for the Capitals. Frederic was cross-checking Ovechkin in the arm, which led to the Washington captain to spear Frederic in the groin. Ovechkin received a two-minute minor on the play for slashing, while Frederic got two-minutes for cross-checking.

Tensions appeared to boil over from earlier in the game when Frederic hit Ovechkin into the boards. Ovechkin got up, and went after Frederic, looking like he was challenging him to a fight. The Bruins forward then dropped his gloves, and grabbed onto Ovechkin's jersey, while Ovechkin just stood there, not doing anything.

The Bruins and Capitals will face off on Friday night at 7pm ET in Boston. It'll be interesting to see if Frederic will seek any retribution for being speared in the groin.
