It's always awesome to hear about hockey families going the extra mile for each other. Bonnie O'Reilly, the mother of Ryan O'Reilly of the St. Louis Blues, certainly did that, making a huge donation to a family friend who had helped her son in the very early stages of what would become a successful hockey career.

According to the St. Louis Blues, Bonnie is recovering after donating a kidney to that family friend. The friend, who wasn't named, would often open the town rink early so Ryan and his brother, Cal, could skate when they were kids in Ontario.

That is a massive gesture on the part of Bonnie and one that certainly deserves all the respect in the world. Jeremy Rutherford, who covers the Blues for The Athletic, mentioned that he's spoken to Bonnie and her husband Brian several times, calling them "the salt of the earth"

Kidney issues seems to hold a special significance for the O' Reilly family. Back in June of last year, Ryan granted a wish to a three-year old battling kidney disease who wanted to meet him. The boy, named Hank, wanted to play hockey with O' Reilly. That will take place once it is safe for all involved to do so.
