This one is bound to ruffle some feathers, especially fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs. It's also certain to cause a lot of debate among those who aren't, as well.

PK Subban Makes Controversial Statement on the Toronto Maple Leafs

In an appearance on ESPN in his analyst role, former NHL defenseman PK Subban took a big time jab at the Leafs. The crux of his statement was that the team would be nothing without star goal scorer Auston Matthews.

"They better hope Auston Matthews scores 100 goals because they may not make it.

I'm telling you right now, you take that guy off that team, and they ain't gettin' into the playoffs.

That got a big reaction from fellow analyst and former NHLer Mark Messier.

Messier: "Whoa, that's a big statement."

Subban: "That IS a big statement."

Messier: "He should be considered as the MVP."

Subban: Yeah! He's gotta be.

A Hot Take on the Maple Leafs from PK Subban

Subban then reiterated his point that without Matthews, the Toronto Maple Leafs would be nowhere near the team they are with him, adding it's not just the amount of goals he scores, but also his ability to score them when it's needed the most. It's a definite criticism of the team as a whole considering the amount of money being paid to teammates John Tavares, Mitch Marner, William Nylander, and Morgan Rielly. If Matthews has to play at an MVP level just for Toronto to make the playoffs, there's something wrong.

Going into tonight's game against the Colorado Avalanche, Matthews sits at 52 goals in 55 games. If he can stay on his current pace and remain healthy, he can break the 70-goal mark Alexander Mogilny was the last NHL player to do it, all the way back in 1992-93
