With the playoffs just around the corner, Calgary Flames defenceman Chris Tanev would be a perfect add for any team looking to go on a deep run. Tanev is an on-ice presence to be reckoned with, and takes his game very seriously. One expert believes he's going to end up in a shocking destination before the trade deadline hits.

Tanev to Shocking Location Being Predicted by Analysts

Daniel Nugent Brown of The Athletic predicts Tanev will end up with the playoff bound Edmonton Oilers, adding an interesting twist to the ongoing Battle of Alberta.

"They will acquire Chris Tanev: As hated rivals, the Oilers and Flames are almost never trading partners. Steve Staios heading south in 2010 was the first deal consummated between the two teams. Since then, Ladislav Smid and Laurent Brossoit served as the main pieces in one swap, and Milan Lucic and James Neal changed places in the other — a case of flipping underperforming veteran wingers with bloated contracts."

Nugent-Brown added an exchange for Tanev would be the biggest between the two rivals in the NHL's history.

"Tanev would represent the most prominent player ever exchanged between the Alberta clubs. The Oilers could really use him as an upgrade over Cody Ceci next to Darnell Nurse. Tanev is believed to be one of the Oilers' most coveted targets. They can swing it if they pony up." — Daniel Nugent-Bowman

Tanev Heading to Calgary's Biggest Rival Says Expert

Again, Tanev is exactly the type of player any team wants on their side going into the playoffs. The postseason is an absolute grind and will test the grit of any team that manages to make it. And, the further you go, the more of a grind it gets. The 34-year-old will like fetch a good return on the open market, so Oilers Ken Holland better be prepared to face the asking price if he wants to be involved in negotiations.

Tanev will become a free agent at the end of this season. His current contract does allow him a 10-team no trade list. No word on whether Edmonton is one it, or whether he'd be willing to waive it if it is.
