The NHLPA has already agreed to a 10 per cent salary deferral in the six-year collective bargaining agreement extension, which was signed this past July, just prior to the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. This news was first reported by New York Rangers reporter Larry Brooks. Brooks said it is unclear at this time whether the players union will respond to the request, and also said it is unknown whether this request represents an ultimatum or if it is just an initial position in the bargaining between the two sides.
TSN's Pierre LeBrun later spoke on this issue and mentioned all of the players who are involved in the return-to-play committee. These players are David Backes, Darren Helm, David Savard, Justin Faulk, Lars Eller, Sam Gagner, Justin Abdelkader, Ian Cole, Zach Hyman, Ron Hainsey, Claude Giroux, Ryan Dzingel, Andrew Copp, Alex Biega, Chris Kreider, and Mark Scheifele.
At this point, it seems unlikely the players would be willing to agree to yet another pay cut, but things can change. The league has continued to say they hope to start the 2020-21 season as soon as January 1, but with COVID cases continuing to rise, as well as this new issue, it doesn't seem anything near a guarantee.
