Brendan Gallagher's exit from Montreal looks close, and Martin St-Louis may be nearing the end of a long, awkward wait.

What had been a slow-burning trade story now feels like something with real traction.

A report from Simon-Olivier Lorange has pushed this file forward in a big way, and it changes the tone around Gallagher's future with the Canadiens.

Lorange used a public event to speak with Gallagher after the veteran was honored as sports personality of the year 2026.

That matters, because Gallagher didn't shut the door on the noise around him.

He confirmed the process is real and that his camp is actively working through it.

His agent, according to the report, is making calls and trying to line up a fit fast. That's not background chatter anymore.

"A transaction will likely be completed in the coming days," he said.

That's movement.

The line that jumps off the page is the one pointing to a deal in the coming days.

If that holds, Gallagher could have a new address before this week is over.

Why this could move fast now: Gallagher's next team

This timing makes sense for both sides. Montreal doesn't gain much by dragging this into late June with the draft and free agency right around the corner.

The sooner this gets settled, the sooner the Canadiens can sort out the rest of their offseason picture and clear one more layer of uncertainty from the room.

Gallagher also has plenty of reason to want this done quickly.

Waiting through weeks of rumors is one thing. Sitting in the middle of an active trade push is another.

At this stage, clarity has value. So does a landing spot where he can step into a defined role instead of spending the summer guessing.

One destination keeps circling back in the conversation: Vancouver. The fit is easy to understand, and the connection has followed this story from the start.

"I'll fall off my chair if Gally plays for any club other than the Canucks in 26-27, me"

A return home would give Gallagher a fresh lane and give the Canucks a veteran voice who knows how to handle pressure, hard minutes, and a demanding market.

Nothing is official yet, and trade talk can turn fast. But this no longer feels like empty speculation.

It feels like a file that's been pushed to the front burner, with both sides ready to stop talking around it and finally make the move.
