Report: Jets may need to part with 2020 tenth overall pick to acquire Timo Meier
The Winnipeg Jets are one of a handful of teams that are interested in adding San Jose Sharks sniper Timo Meier to their lineup, along with the Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils.
According to Nick Kypreos of The Star, if the Winnipeg Jets are to try and acquire Meier, they may have to part with 2020 first-round pick, Cole Perfetti.
He added, "With Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele on expiring contracts in 2024 and Pierre-Luc Dubois wanting out, Winnipeg would have the necessary funds to get Meier on a long-term deal. The problem is he could also cost them top prospect Cole Perfetti."
Perfetti, 21, is enjoying a solid first full season in the National Hockey League. Coming into Sunday's game, the Whitby (Ontario) native has 29 points (seven goals, 22 assists), 16 penalty minutes and is a plus-ten, while averaging 14:55 TOI per game. He has one more year left on his entry-level contract following this season and in July 2024, will become a restricted free agent with a qualifying offer of $874,125.
Giving up Perfetti would be a huge cost, but getting a proven goal scorer in Timo Meier, who's still only 26, isn't an opportunity that comes around every day. The question is, would Kevin Cheveldayoff be comfortable trading Perfetti to San Jose without knowing if Meier will sign an extension with the Jets? A lot of questions will need to be asked internally before the Jets act, but with the trade deadline in less than two weeks, they'll need to figure things out relatively soon.
