Cleveland Indians right-hander Emmanuel Clase has been suspended 80 games after testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug boldenone, Major League Baseball announced on Friday.

For now, it is not exactly clear when Clase's suspension would begin. According to The Athletic's Zack Meisel, the suspension starts only when a MLB season does. However, a March report from ESPN's Jeff Passan stated that "any players punished with a drug suspension will serve the penalty in 2020, even if there is no season."

"We were disappointed to learn of today's suspension of Emmanuel Clase for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program," a Cleveland statement obtained by MLB.com's Mandy Bell. "We fully support Major League Baseball's policy and its efforts to eliminate performance-enhancing drugs from our game.

"We have been in contact with Emmanuel, and we will welcome him back after the discipline has been served."

Clase had suffered an upper-back strain in late February and was expected to miss 8-12 weeks.

The 22-year-old Dominican pitcher was acquired alongside Delino DeShields in the trade that sent Corey Kluber to the Texas Rangers in December.

In 23.1 innings with the Rangers in 2019, the righty an 2.31 ERA with 21 strikeouts and one save.
