Miguel Marte, who was a former A's minor-leaguer, passed away with complications from COVID-19 this week, the team announced Friday on social media.

The 30-year-old was a native of the Dominican Republic. He played in the A's organization for parts of five seasons from 2008 to 2012. He made it as far as Single-A ball, hitting a combined .251 with 16 homers and 117 RBI.

A GoFundMe page was set up on behalf of Marte by his family. He is survived by his wife, Jasmin, twin girls and a young son. The Athletics have donated $1,000 to the fundraiser.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an extreme impact on the baseball world, as the 2020 MLB regular season was scheduled to begin in late March, but was then put on hold when the MLB decided to follow in the footsteps of the NBA and NHL by suspending its play.

While MLB officials have insisted their desire to have a full season and the belief that it will still happen in some capacity, no plans have been put into place.
