CSKA offered Alexander Romanov some big money to return home

Despite his recent trade from the Montreal Canadiens to the New York Islanders, defenceman Alexander Romanov is not under contract. The 22-year-old is officially a restricted free agent until the Isles sign him to a new deal. In the meantime, his old KHL team reportedly tried to get him to return home.

According to Sport24.ru, CSKA Moscow recently offered Romanov a two-year contract worth 120 million rubles. That's 60 million per season, which is just a smidge under $1 million dollars USD. That's more money than Romanov has made per season in the NHL so far, and it would put him among the top paid players in the KHL. It's also important to note that the KHL's salary cap does not include bonuses, meaning players can end up making much more than their listed salary.

Romanov spent two seasons with CSKA before coming to North America. He won a Gagarin Cup with the team in 2019. At the recent NHL entry draft, Romanov was involved in a trade that sent him to the Islanders for the 13th overall pick, while the Canadiens flipped that pick and another to the Chicago Blackhawks for forward Kirby Dach.
