One day removed from the NHL suspending the season and there is a small step towards normality. The NHL put the season on hold following a positive test for COVID-19 in the NBA. Now, NHLPA chief Don Fehr says that he expects teams will be cleared to open their training facilities to allow player workouts as early as next week.

The NHLPA has asked players to take the weekend off to allow for a complete disinfection of team spaces, to prevent further spreading of the virus. Although there have been no confirmed cases amongst players, multiple staff members inside arenas have had positive tests for Corona Virus.

The NHL is hoping to be able to almost show the path it would take to make its way back to playing hockey games and gearing up for the playoffs next week.

NHL players have also received confirmation from Sportsnet's Chris Johnston that they will be paid during the stoppage of play. Including Friday, the players will receive two more paycheques for this season: March 30 and April 15.

Under the CBA, NHL owners are given the ability to negotiate different salaries for players if the league “suspends, ceases or reduces operations” due to a “state of war or other cause beyond the control of the league or the club.”

Johnston reports that NHL players will face significant escrow withholdings above the current rate of 14% once the business gets up and running again.
