Bad news for the Columbus Blue Jackets as defenseman Seth Jones will be out longer than expected with an ankle injury. According to the team, the 25-year-old former fourth overall pick underwent surgery Tuesday for a fractured ankle and will miss the next eight-to-ten weeks. That puts him on the sidelines for the remainder of the regular season.
Jones suffered the injury in a game against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. While it's unlikely that he'll return before the end of the regular season, he could be available in the playoffs if Columbus can make it. Right now, the team is in the first wild card spot in the East, three points ahead of Carolina.
Jones, who has 30 points in 56 games this season and just appeared in his third All-Star game, joins a long list of injured members of the Blue Jackets. It includes forwards Alexander Wennberg, Alexandre Texier, Josh Anderson and Brandon Dubinsky; defencemen Dean Kukan and Ryan Murray; and goaltender Joonas Korpisalo. Jones and Zach Werenski lead the Blue Jackets defence corps in basically every category.
