Carolina going for maximum term at a lower salary for Jesperi Kotkaniemi

It appears the offer sheet to get Jesperi Kotkaniemi to the Carolina Hurricanes from the Montreal Canadiens has worked out for both sides. There's word that the Canes are looking to lock up Kotkaniemi to a maximum term contract, although it will come with a lower salary than what he is getting this year.

"Jesperi Kotkaniemi sounds like 8 years $4.25-$4.5 in Carolina," said Andy Strickland of Bally Sports.

As noted by Chris Johnston of Sportsnet, because the contract is for the maximum eight years, it can't be officially signed until after the trade deadline of March 21st.

Kotkaniemi is making $6.1 million this season, which was the amount of the offer sheet that brought him to Carolina. He would be a restricted free agent at the end of this season. Kotkaniemi has 11 goals and 23 points in 54 games this season. If he signs for eight years, Kotkaniemi will be 29 when the deal expires.
