News that Russian NHLers may seek asylum in North America called absurd by Russian politician
A Russian politician is calling news that Russian NHLers may be seeking political asylum or permanent residency in the United States or Canada pure propaganda.
"Who said it? Full Name? Who? Yes, no one. Either the nationalists of a well-known fraternal neighboring country, or our enemies deliberately threw in new fake information," State Duma Dmitry Svishchev claimed to Sport24.ru.
"Well, why do they need some kind of shelter? This is absurd. If someone wants to become a citizen, he goes and calmly draws up all the documents. Such news has a return address - the city of Kyiv," added Svishchev, referring to Ukraine's capital city.
"I haven't seen any hockey player who told me he wants to get asylum in the USA or Canada because he plays there."
"Our hockey players are loyal to their country. So it's all bullshit. Soon everything will calm down and everything will be fine. We should not worry about silly provocations."
On Thursday, TSN quoted two immigrations lawyers, one who works with 25 NHL and AHL teams, say they've been contacted by Russian players and agents regarding asylum or permanent residency in North America. Some are worried that both countries will stop issuing work permits and travel visas to Russians as sanctions are piled on in an attempt to stop Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine's embassy in Ottawa has requested that Canada not issue new work permits and travel visas for Russian athletes. A government official told TSN that Canada was considering this request.
Svishkov, who has been heavily involved in sports in Russia, has frequently accused the United States and Japan of running an influence campaign within the International Olympic Committee with a goal of discrediting Russian athletes and reducing the country's medal count.
