Auston Matthews has been struggling with an injury over the last several games of the team's first-round series against the Boston Bruins. Today a Toronto radio host named Howard Berger alleged that Auston Matthews could be battling a serious ailment.
While speaking about the Toronto Maple Leafs series Howard Berger talked about the Auston Matthews injury. He has interpreted the secrecy behind Auston Matthews' health to mean the star could be dealing with a concussion.
UPDATEHoward Berger, the man behind this report, deleted his post after public backlash.
«I know that Matthews has sustained at least two concussions during his years in the NHL,» said the sports clinician. «And, while I have no pertinent info, the fact the Leafs are calling it an ‘illness' rather than an injury — and that the issue is complicated by physical exertion — leads me to think he may have taken another shot to the head. Of course, the NHL has strict concussion protocol and the Leafs would be obligated to keep Matthews out of the line–up if he's experiencing any effects of post–concussion syndrome. I'm sort of debunking my own argument, but no one tells the truth in the playoffs. So we are left to speculate. And, I'm comfortable with the head–shot hypothesis.»
Now even during his argument Howard Berger makes it sound like this is quite the elaborate conspiracy theory to make the jump from illness to concussion. The league has policies in place to protect players from themselves and this kind of deception would be bypassing them all.
While Auston Matthews does indeed likely just have some sort of illness that he cannot shake now the small seed of doubt has been planted by Howard Berger. Regardless of what Auston Matthews is dealing with it seems like the team is preparing to play a must-win game without their top center.
