The 2022 World Juniors were cancelled on December 29th due to COVID-related reasons. In their press conference announcing the cancellation, International Ice Hockey Federation president Luc Tardif told reporters to give him and his team a month to figure things out about a possible reschedule of the tournament.

On Thursday's edition of Insider Trading on TSN, Darren Dreger reported that the IIHF is planning towards a summer World Junior tournament, likely to be held in August.

"There's a lot of work being done, discussions and planning for the World Junior Hockey Championship. A summer version if you will. Now, some are suggesting that much of the discussion has been around the month of August and trying to find a way to host the event in Red Deer and Alberta as the target sites in August. There has been some discussion in terms of hosting it in June as well, but August seems more likely," Dreger said.

He added, "Now, that could create problems for some of the top NHL prospects that we saw over the holiday season. We're talking about Cole Perfetti, Mason McTavish or Owen Power cause we know the training and the focus for these young players is on their upcoming NHL season. Hockey Canada, the IIHF, everyone associated is hopeful that those names could be involved, but there's still a whole lot of work to get done."

One big issue that would need to get dealt with is the age restriction. Anyone turning 20 before January 1st 2022 was not eligible to participate at the tournament. Players such as Cole Perfetti, Kaiden Guhle, Jan Mysak, Topi Niemela have or will turn 20 before the rescheduled tournament takes place. Will they be allowed to participate? As Darren Dreger said, a lot of work needs to get done.
