The Edmonton Oilers having been looking for answers to turn their season around for well over a month now, yet nothing seems to be going in their favour.

The long list of things that have gone wrong continued for them on Thursday, as the team announced that goaltender Mike Smith will miss one or two weeks due to a partial tear in a tendon in his thumb. The injury apparently came during a game against the New Jersey Devils, one in which Smith missed a single game afterward. Despite appearing in a game less than a week after against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the injury was still bugging him and an MRI revealed the partially torn tendon.

Many questioned the Oilers' goaltending tandem heading into 2021-22, with concerns regarding Smith's durability and Koskinen's inconsistency. Those questions appear to have had good cause, as Smith has only appeared in six games while Koskinen, despite a solid 12-7-1 record, has struggled, especially as of late. It will be interesting to see if general manager Ken Holland admits to his mistake in going with this duo and searches for help ahead of the trade deadline.
