The worst has been confirmed for the Pittsburgh Penguins as Mike Sullivan has provided updates on Evgeni Malkin and Nick Bjugstad. Both Malkin and Bjugstad are suffering from lower-body injuries that are expected to keep the pair out long-term. Sullivan believes that Malkin will be out longer-term than Bjugstad, but he did add that he does not believe that Malkin's injury will be a season-ending injury, which is encouraging.. silver linings and all that.
The Pens are expected to go with Jared McCann as the team's second line centre for the time being, with Teddy Blueger expected to slide up into the 3C role while the team decides how to best address these long-term injuries. There is no timetable for an expected return for either Bjugstad or Malkin at this time.
This is a huge blow to the Pens as division rivals like the Devils and the Rangers have made some drastic improvements to their rosters ahead of this season, which should create more competition within the Metro Division.
