The agent of Samvel Mnatsyan, who played parts of six seasons in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), has confirmed his death. Mnatsyan, who was 29, was diagnosed with cancer last year, shortly after signing a two-year contract with HC Sibir Novosibirsk of the KHL as a free agent. He would never play for the team.

Mnatsyan played with HC Kladno (owned by Jaromir Jgar) in the Czech Extraliga during the 2010–11 season. The defenseman signed with Barys Astana of the Kontinental Hockey League the following year. In 2013, Mnatsyan joined HC Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk and stayed for two seasons alongside spells in the Supreme Hockey League. In June of 2015, Mnatsyan signed with Admiral Vladivostok.

After three seasons with Admiral Vladivostok, Mnatsyan left following the 2017–18 campaign, signing the two-year contract with HC Sibir Novosibirsk. Not long after, doctors diagnosed him with a spinal tumour. Mnatsyan went to Germany for medical help, and after half a year he returned to his homeland. He would pass away as a result of his illness on October 5th.

"The Russian Hockey Federation expresses its deepest condolences to the family, close ones, partners, everyone who knew Samvel Mnatsyan,” the FHR noted.
