Morgan Rielly and the Toronto Maple Leafs blue line just got put on notice, and the front office isn't shopping in the bargain bin.

Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday Headlines that Toronto has told people it won't move premium assets for a B-level replacement on defense. Only a true difference maker gets that price.

“They've made it very clear they are not interested in a band-aid solution,” Friedman said. Heading into tonight's puck drop against the San Jose Sharks, that stance carries real weight.

Because the Leafs sit last in the Atlantic Division. Eighth of eight, with a 3-4-2 record and three straight losses.

Saturday's 4-1 home loss to the New York Islanders evened the season series at a win apiece. It also pushed Toronto's goals against to 32 through nine games.

Look at the back end and the problem jumps off the page. Not one Toronto defenseman has scored a goal this season.

Rielly owns a -6 rating, the worst mark on the roster. Only one of his assists has come over his last five games.

Darren Raddysh and an $8.5 million blue line still can't score

Darren Raddysh carries an $8,500,000 cap hit and still hasn't found the net. Two of his assists have come on the power play, which tells you where his value lives right now.

Jake McCabe and Oliver Ekman-Larsson have each dressed for all nine games. Neither one has recorded a single point.

And the only Toronto defenseman sitting in plus territory isn't available. Chris Tanev, at +1, is on injured reserve.

That leaves Troy Stecher and Marshall Rifai as the depth answers. Stecher has 1 point and went minus-2 through nine games.

Goaltending hasn't bailed anyone out either. Anthony Stolarz owns an .875 save percentage, and Sergei Bobrovsky sits at .891.

Here's where Friedman's report lands right. Overpaying for a third-pair stopgap in October would be a bad trade, full stop, and this front office knows it.

Patching this group with a depth body is like slapping a new muffler on a car with a cracked engine block. It sounds better for about a week.

The forwards are holding up their end. Auston Matthews has 13 points in nine games, with 8 of them coming over his last five.

But patience has a cost. John Tavares is on injured reserve with a lower-body injury and isn't expected back until at least November 27.

So who blinks first? Toronto wants a difference maker, and any seller on the other end of the phone can read the standings too.

After tonight, the Leafs head to Columbus for a back-to-back Tuesday. A Thursday date with the Rangers follows, then a road trip through Edmonton, Calgary, Seattle, and Vancouver.

Jim Hiller can shuffle his pairings all he wants. If nothing changes by the time that trip wraps in Vancouver, the asking price for a real fix only climbs.

Maple Leafs will pay a premium asset only for a difference maker on defence, per Friedman

Should the Maple Leafs hold out for a true difference maker on defense even if it means sliding further down the Atlantic?
