Jacob Battaglia is heading to Hartford as Mike Sullivan and the New York Rangers made their first real roster squeeze of camp.
The Rangers assigned Battaglia, Brody Lamb, Spencer Martin, Dylan Roobroeck and Callum Tung to Hartford, clearing five names from the NHL group in one move.
That's the kind of transaction that changes the temperature around camp. Five lockers disappear, practice groups shrink and the players still standing suddenly see fewer bodies between themselves and an opening-night spot.
Battaglia headlines the group because every young player sent down carries a little extra intrigue. His assignment doesn't close the book, but it does make the Rangers' immediate plans much clearer.
Lamb and Roobroeck are heading the same way, taking two more developing forwards out of Sullivan's current mix. The competition up front just became a lot less crowded.

The same pressure lands on Lamb and Roobroeck. Development time in the AHL can move quickly when a player starts producing and injuries begin reshaping an NHL depth chart.
There's also a bigger roster consequence here. New York didn't just send five players down - the Rangers narrowed Sullivan's choices and pushed the remaining bubble players closer to an answer.
Chris Drury and Sullivan still have more work ahead before the roster settles, but this was the first noticeable wave out the door.
And for five Rangers hopefuls, the NHL dream didn't disappear Thursday. It just moved north to Hartford.
