Adam Fantilli is staying with Rick Bowness and the Columbus Blue Jackets after a contract standoff that dragged deep into September.
Columbus and Fantilli have agreed to a 6-year contract carrying a $13.75 million annual cap hit, ending the biggest unresolved roster question hanging over the club.
The agreement represents an $82.5 million commitment to a center the Blue Jackets drafted 3rd overall in 2023 and have positioned near the middle of their long-term plans.
Timing mattered. Fantilli remained unsigned as training camp arrived, separating one of Columbus' top offensive pieces from the group while Bowness began building his lines and special-teams units.

The gap had lasted for weeks, with Fantilli entering September as a restricted free agent and no agreement in place. That uncertainty disappears immediately.
He now has a contract large enough to change the expectations around his role. Fantilli won't simply be viewed as a young center developing into more responsibility. Columbus is paying him to carry it.
Fantilli deal changes the pressure in Columbus
Fantilli finished last season with 24 goals and 35 assists for 59 points while dressing in all 82 games. He also posted a -13 rating.
Those numbers gave Columbus production and durability, but this contract pushes the conversation into another tier. The Blue Jackets are committing major cap space to what Fantilli can become during the heart of his career.
His previous cap hit was $950,000. Moving to $13.75 million represents one of the largest internal financial shifts Columbus could make entering the new season.
For Bowness, the immediate benefit is much simpler. He gets his center back into the hockey operation without the contract situation hanging over every practice, line combination and media session.
Fantilli can now focus on reclaiming his spot in the top six, taking key offensive-zone assignments and settling into whatever power-play deployment the coaching staff has planned.
And Columbus no longer has to answer the same contract question every day. The money is settled, the term is settled, and one of the Blue Jackets' biggest young pieces is under control for 6 more seasons.
The standoff lasted long enough to create real pressure. With puck drop closing in, Columbus finally got the signature it needed.
