Samuel Montembeault and Martin St-Louis look like they're nearing the end of their Canadiens runway.

That is the big shift hanging over Montreal right now.

Not long ago, Montembeault still looked like the goalie many fans pictured as part of the club's rebuild years. He had fought for his place and finally seemed to have some stability in the organization.

Now the picture feels very different.

The report says the Canadiens' goalie hierarchy has changed fast over the last few months, and that is the heart of this story.

Jakub Dobes is a huge part of that.

He has apparently earned the trust of the coaching staff during a long stretch of high-pressure games, which is exactly the kind of detail that changes a front office's summer plans.

Jacob Fowler adds the other layer.

The piece says Fowler keeps confirming why the organization views him as one of the most promising prospects in the system, and that is what makes Montembeault's situation feel even tighter.

This is where it starts to look like more than a rumor.

Canadiens fans are heartbroken after the latest confirmation involving a fan favorite

The report goes as far as saying Pierre LeBrun recently indicated the end could come for Montembeault in Montreal this summer.

That is a strong line.

The logic behind it is simple enough. If Dobes and Fowler are ready to hold the top 2 spots, then keeping a veteran goalie at more than 3 million dollars as the third option becomes difficult to justify.

That does not mean Montembeault has no value.

Quite the opposite, according to the piece. Teams across the league are always looking for more stability in net, and a goalie with his experience could still become an interesting trade option.

That is why Kent Hughes has a real call to make.

He can keep a respected veteran around and risk shrinking his role even more, or he can try to move him while the market still sees a useful NHL goalie.

For Montembeault, this would be a tough ending in Montreal.

But for the Canadiens, it may be one of those moments where a younger depth chart forces a change before everyone is fully ready for it.

And right now, that is exactly what this sounds like.
