Social media reactions to Auston Matthews gracing the cover of an EA NHL game twice in three years
With Auston Matthews gracing the NHL22 cover, it will mark the second time in just three seasons that the reigning Rocket Richard Trophy winner has landed the cover of the EA Games staple. Matthews was the cover athlete for NHL20 as well.
While exciting for the Maple Leafs and their fans, the news hasn't been received well in other markets. A quick gander at the reactions on social media tells the story.
The reactions weren't all bad, however. Some Leafs fans took the opportunity to have some fun with their poster boy gracing the cover twice in 3 years.
Regardless of what we as fans may think, the the NHL and EA Sports recognized a massive opportunity to market one of the game's brightest stars in one of the game's largest markets. It is a business after all.
