Owen Power, the defenceman taken first overall in the most recent draft by the Buffalo Sabres, has decided on his fate for next season. According to a report by the Buffalo News, Power has decided to return to the University of Michigan for at least one more year before making the jump to pro hockey.

This shouldn't come as a huge surprise. It had been rumoured for a while that the Ontario born blueliner would wait before coming to the NHL. Power was the third player drafted first directly out of college, joining Michigan State forward Joe Murphy in 1986 and Boston University goalie Rck DiPietro in 2000. He also became the 16th defenseman to go No. 1 since 1970, and first since the Sabres chose Rasmus Dahlin at No. 1 in 2018.

Power already has his fair share of accolades for playing hockey. He won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2021 World Hockey Championship. He was USHL Defenceman of the Year in 2019-2020 and named to the All-Big 10 Freshman team after his latest season. In 26 games with Michigan in 2020-21, Power scored three goals and recorded 16 points.
