According to multiple sources, the Detroit Red Wings are buying out the final year of Frans Nielsen's contract which carried a cap hit of $5.25 million.

This move doesn't come as much of a surprise as Nielsen is a shell of the player he was during his best seasons with the Islanders. This deal, which was signed prior to the beginning of the 2016-17 season, never really panned out for the Red Wings, as the now 37-year-old started to decline as a player shortly after getting to Detroit.

In 2020-21, Nielsen managed just a goal and six points in 29 games, meaning this may very well have been the last we have seen from him as an NHLer. If he is indeed done, he had a very solid and underrated career with 167 goals and 473 points in 925 games.
