Center for SafeSport asked to investigate Stan Bowman's role with USA Hockey
Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman is likely feeling some heat as the U.S. Center for SafeSport has been officially asked to investigate his role with the U.S. Men's Olympic Hockey team. The request has been made by lawyer Susan Loggans.
"As you know," Loggans wrote in an email to SafeSport, "I represent two sexual assault victims who were attacked by [former Blackhawks video coach] Brad Aldrich. I am officially requesting an investigation into a coverup of these sexual assaults by Stan Bowman, an NHL team official who also holds a position of major influence with USA Hockey."
Bowman has been named the GM of the US Men's Hockey team for the 2022 Winter Olympics. SafeSport has exclusive jurisdiction in the U.S. to investigate and pass judgment on accusations of misconduct in Olympic and Paralympic sports. According to its rules "the privilege of participation in the Olympic and Paralympic movement may be limited, conditioned, suspended, terminated or denied if a participant's conduct is or was inconsistent with this Code or the best interest of sport and those who participate in it."
The "Code" referred to in the rules states "An adult participant who fails to report actual or suspended sexual misconduct or child abuse to the Center and, when appropriate, to law enforcement may be subject to disciplinary action under the Center's resolution procedures and may also be subject to federal or state penalties."
Bowman was the GM of the Blackhawks in 2010. A former player has filed a lawsuit against the team stating they were sexually assaulted and threatened by former Chicago video coach Brad Aldrich. The player claims the concerns were brought to management who swept it under the rug without filing a police. The other player involved in the suit is suing the team for providing Aldrich with a letter of recommendation when he left Chicago. Aldrich would end up a registered sex offender in the state of Michigan after an incident involving that hockey player, who was in high school at the time.
"I believe the Center has an obligation and the purview to investigate these allegations of serious wrongdoing because of its connection to the U.S. Olympic Committee, and federal funding of USA Hockey,» Loggans wrote in her email to SafeSport.
So far, there's been no response to the request.
