The controversy around the New York Rangers has just reached an all-time high, as it has just been revealed a staff member got fired for having dinner with a player.

Via USA Today's Vince Mercogliano comes word that a New York Rangers public relations staffer was let go prior to the 2024-25 season following dinner with a player after a media event, in what is being described as a culture problem.

Mercogliano writes: «In the aftermath of a PR person being fired for having dinner with a player following a media event prior to the new season, a letter signed by Drury, as well as Knicks president Leon Rose and MSG COO Jamaal Lesane, was distributed to all team employees issuing «a reminder regarding the expectations of behavior when interacting with the players or coaches of any of our Teams.»

Other "culture issues" in the report include the controversial offseason release of longtime trainer Jim Ramsay, which players reportedly didn't take too well. A memo is mentioned that went out to team employees before the season.

The internal memo read: «Interactions between employees and players or coaches must be strictly limited except as necessary to satisfy the requirements of an employee's role,» it read. «Failure to comply with the directives set forth in this memorandum may result in disciplinary action, including, without limitation, termination of employment.»

The memo thus provided hard and fast rules for staff against staying in the same hotel as any team under the MSG umbrella, such as the minor-league Hartford Wolf Pack or Westchester Knicks, without written approval from an Executive Vice President or higher.

They couldn't travel on team flights or buses, nor could they join team social events or meals. In response, some members of the Rangers' staff reportedly protested the policy by boycotting the next team function.

«The result was added tension in a workplace that had become increasingly strained,» wrote Mercogliano.

This is yet another controversial moment to be added to weeks of a major firestorm on Broadway right now. Major changes could still be forthcoming.
