Jack Roslovic didn't sign in Toronto just to reunite with an old friend. He genuinely believes this roster is walking into something real.
"The Leafs are a team that, you could say, didn't have their best year last year, but it's a team that is new, young, vibrant and ready to win," Roslovic said.
He pointed to the mix of familiar faces and new additions as a real asset heading into camp, not just roster turnover for its own sake.
"There are a couple of familiar faces around, a really cool, exciting style of hockey, and I just wanted to be a part of it," Roslovic said.
He specifically credited the new arrivals with strengthening the locker room dynamic, not disrupting it.
"With some new faces around, it creates a little bit more camaraderie. The core group that's been here for many years is excited about it as well," Roslovic said.
Roslovic posted 21 goals and 15 assists for 36 points in 69 games last season before signing in Toronto, exactly the kind of speed and secondary scoring new head coach Jim Hiller has talked about wanting up front.
Roslovic reflects on Matthews' growth from afar
The bigger storyline for Roslovic personally is reuniting with Auston Matthews, someone he's stayed close with since their shared roots in the U.S. National Development Program.
"I've been watching Auston from afar, obviously still close friends, and watching the way he's grown as a person and as a player is remarkable," Roslovic said.
He didn't shy away from acknowledging how demanding the captaincy has been for Matthews specifically.
"Being the captain here obviously isn't an easy thing to do, but the way he plays and the way I know he exerts himself on a daily basis is awesome," Roslovic said.

That personal history adds a real layer to Toronto's offseason storyline, especially with questions still swirling about whether Matthews bounces back from a rough, injury-shortened season.
"I'm excited to get pushing with him, be able to play and pick up where we left off," Roslovic said.
Whether that chemistry actually translates into real minutes together on the ice remains to be seen, but Roslovic's enthusiasm fits the broader tone coming out of Toronto's locker room heading into a summer full of change.
