Matvei Michkov arrives in North America with plenty of hype and expectation, but according to his General Manager, he may struggle in his rookie campaign.
The Philadelphia Flyers took a major step forward in 2023/24, and now, they've got even more reason for optimism, with former top pick Matvei Michkov officially arriving in North America ahead of a critical season. Given the hype, there's no reason for fans to expect anything less than a Calder Trophy contending season, but it appears as though General Manager Danny Briere is tempering expectations ahead of his rookie campaign.
«It's gonna be a tough season for him. This is the best league in the world. It's a big step. It's not going to be easy. So my expectations are actually pretty low.»
At just 19-years of age, the seventh overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft excelled in the KHL a year ago, playing in 47 games and ending the season with 19 goals and 41 points, hanging in arguably the second hardest hockey league in the world. The next step is the toughest one to take however, but it appears as though Michkov will have plenty of help with some veteran forwards like Travis Konecny and Sean Couturier leading the way.
Right now, there's few prospects in the NHL with more potential than Michkov, so while excitement is high, he may not excel early in his career, so let's hope the team can focus on his development and help him live up to the immense hype that he already has behind him.
