As we previously reported, former Montreal Canadien and Nashville Predator Alexei Emelin appeared to be in rough shape in hospital in Russia after suffering "toxic liver shock." The condition is caused by a build up of bacteria in the liver, sometimes due to an adverse reaction to prescription drugs. Unfortunately for Emelin, we're learning things have gotten worse.

According to 360tv out of Russia, the 34-year-old co-captain of the KHL's Avangard Omsk is currently be prepped for a life-saving liver transplant, something that will change his life forever. Emelin was transported to a facility in Moscow early Wednesday morning where the procedure will take place.

360tv reports Emelin suffered acute liver failure, although the exact reason why is not yet known. His team is currently taking part in the KHL playoffs and Emelin has been playing. He first went to hospital on Tuesday after getting a high fever. It had been suspected that he had come down with a case of COVID-19, but he tested negative.

Emelin played 456 games in the NHL, mostly for the Habs, and was well-known for dishing out some heavy hits. His final season in the league was with the Predators in 2017-18. His co-captain with Avangard is another former NHLer, Ilya Kovalchuk.
