It appears a suspension is coming for Joachim Blichfeld of the San Jose Sharks. The NHL's Department of Player Safety has announced the Danish forward will have a hearing Thursday for an "illegal check to the head" of Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche. The hit, which you can see below, took place almost midway through the third period of the Avs 4-0 win Wednesday night.
Blichfeld received a match penalty for the hit. Colorado coach Jared Bednar did say after the game that MacKinnon is expected to be ok and shouldn't miss any time. Blichfeld's teammate Brent Burns came to his defence in a post game interview, saying it didn't look like Blichfeld "smashed" MacKinnon's head and that young guys need to establish their physical game. He also said attempting to stick-check MacKinnon usually leads to getting embarrassed.
