A 56 game season leaves very little room for losing streaks. The Montreal Canadiens are currently in the midst of a five-game losing streak after a hot start to the season. The skid has cost now former head coach Claude Julien and associate coach Kirk Muller their jobs. You have to think that general manager Marc Bergevin would be the next to hit the unemployment line if things continue to go south and one reporter states his replacement has already been lined up.

Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun (have your grain of salt handy? Good, take it now), writes that he's hearing Bergevin will be shown the door if the Canadiens don't make the playoffs and his replacement will be none other than Hall-of-Fame goaltender and four-time Stanley Cup winner (including two with the Habs) Patrick Roy. Roy was drafted by Montreal and played for the team from 1985 until that infamous night of December 2nd, 1995 when he told then Canadiens President Ronald Corey that he would never play for the Habs again after being left in net for nine goals against the Detroit Red Wings. Roy claimed then head coach Mario Tremblay was intentionally trying to humiliate him, a claim that seems to have stood the test of time. Four days later, Roy was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, a team he would go on to win another two Stanley Cups with.

"I actually like the Montreal Canadiens' roster. I like their defence. I like their depth up front. I really like Nick Suzuki," said Simmons in his latest column for the Sun. "If Carey Price had played better in goal, Claude Julien would still be coaching the team and all would presumably be well Keep hearing if the Habs don't turn this season around, Patrick Roy will wind up replacing Marc Bergevin as general manager."

Roy has no experience as a general manager with an NHL team. He has, however, served as head coach and President of Hockey Operations with Colorado. He currently serves as the general manager and head coach of the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Part of me would love to see Roy back with the Canadiens in a major role such as general manager. Another part of me thinks he would be ripped apart by the media in no time. much like he was when he played between the pipes in Montreal. That said, Roy is a colourful character and generally perceived a hothead, so a tenure as general manager in the NHL would be anything but boring. This all depends on whether the Canadiens make the playoffs this season. The team is currently in the last post-season spot in the North Division but needs to find a way to turn around their play immediately if they want to have any hope of hanging on to it.
