A tough break for the Ottawa Senators as the team has announced that Derek Stepan is out for the remainder of the 2020-21 season. Stepan was injured in a game against Montreal on February 23rd after laying a hit on the Habs' Jesperi Kotkaniemi.

"Following a review and assessment by the team's medical staff, it has been determined that Derek requires a surgical procedure to repair a damaged labrum that he incurred in dislocating his left shoulder," said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion. "A procedure is scheduled to take place later this week which will see him miss the remainder of our season but it is expected that he be fully recovered ahead of next season. Our medical staff will remain in regular contact with Derek and his doctors as he continues his recovery."

Stepan, who is making $6.5 million per year, is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season so there's a good chance he may never play for Ottawa again. The 20-year-old recorded one goals and five assists in 20 games with the Sens since being acquired in the offseason. Stepan was traded to the Ottawa Senators by the Arizona Coyotes for a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.

There were rumours that Stepan, 30, and the Sens had been working on a trade as his family (wife and three children) are in the U.S. and Stepan is unable to travel to see them during the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That will no longer be an issue.
