Matt Rempe has been a physical nightmare for the opponents of the New York Rangers this season, but will a suspension force him to change his ways?
After bringing physical play back to the forefront of conversation in the NHL,
Matt Rempe unfortunately took it too far, laying out Jonas Siegenthaler with this hit, leading to his first career suspension of four games.
The suspension was well deserved, as Rempe was on a rampage, delivering several hits that fans would deem questionable, and after serving those four games, he's been asked about whether or not he'll change his style.
It was an accident. I thought I was going to hit the wall... Never want to see a guy get hurt or anything like that. I'm still going to play super hard, play the same way. I'm just going to make sure my hits are clear, like, keep everything compact, keep everything tight... Obviously, watching back, I did make a mistake.
Many have called for the rampaging 6-foot-7 giant to tone his style down, and while he's made it clear that he's not going to change overall, he agrees that he doesn't have to take a run at guys like that anymore.
That style has led to photos emerging of Matt Rempe at New York Rangers practice looking in terrible condition, so while he's still ready to fight, not having to do it every night would certainly help his longevity.
Since returning from the suspension, Rempe has been a healthy scratch for the Rangers, with the team feeling that the 21-year old still has much to learn, and it's perhaps this time away from the ice that will allow him the best vantage point to watch and learn how his teammates conduct business.
Overall, Rempe is great for the game of hockey, as he has brought back the physical style that once led the NHL, and while fans love to see that, they don't want to see it for every game, and now that's a line Rempe is having to learn as his New York Rangers chase a Stanley Cup.
