The Leafs' victory over a very dangerous Calgary Flames squad on Sunday afternoon was not the prettiest game they've ever played, but coming out on the right side of a 3-2 decision, there really isn't much to complain about.
If there was one moment that irked a lot of Maple Leafs fans toward the end of the contest involving an already ailing Jack Campbell and Flames' resident pest, Matthew Tkachuk, in which Tkachuk appeared to give himself a bit of momentum before driving his knee down into the upper back/neck of a downed Campbell in what many are labeling an unnecessary, cowardly and dangerous act. Following the game, TSN's Kristen Shilton tweeted out Campbell's response to the play in question, providing the Jack Campbell of answers, as Shilton cleverly put it, when he stated;
"I don't look at him as a menace. I look at him as a really good hockey player," said Campbell of the man who just dropped two knees down onto his spine. Campbell might be the most pure human in existence.
Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe had nothing but admiration for Campbell's gutsy play for the Leafs on Sunday, crediting the netminder with giving the players in front of him all the confidence in the world.
"You don't get through ugly games like this with a win without your goaltender being your best player. He was that today. He gave our guys great confidence, maybe too much confidence at times, he was outstanding."
Campbell did not go into detail about why he was in such visible discomfort toward the end of the contest, but he did confirm during the post-game media scrum that he had zero intentions of leaving the net in the final minutes of the game.
