Victor Mete of the Montreal Canadiens has yet to play a game in the 2020-21 season, but it appears he's getting a lot of attention. During the «Saturday Headlines» segment of Hockey Night in Canada , Elliotte Friedman reported that Mete has piqued the interest of several teams looking for help at the blue line.
Friedman noted that Montreal's depth is the reason Mete can't seem to find a place for himself in the lineup, unless another defenceman gets injured. However, the Habs are unwilling to send him to the team's taxi squad as that would require putting him on waivers. The risk of losing him would be high, especially considering his salary of $735,000.
"I think there are other teams that are circling around and seeing how the Canadiens are going to handle this over the season," said Friedman.
For its part, the site The Fourth Period thinks the Pittsburgh Penguins might be one of the teams eyeing Mete as they've reportedly been scouring the market to improve their blue line.
Mete, 22, will become a restricted free agent this summer. The fourth round pick (100th overall) in the 2016 draft had four goals and seven assists for 11 points in 51 games with the Canadiens last season.
