Former NHLer Scott Gomez is turning himself into an Instagram star
MTL Blog has called it 'The Best Instagram Account You're Not Following.' Scott Gomez, who played close to 1100 games in the NHL, has used his retirement to showcase his comedy and story-telling skills on his Instagram account and is quickly becoming a favourite among hockey fans.
While it isn't his only feature, Gomez has lured in thousands of hockey fans with a series he calls "Story Time with Uncle Scotty" in which he sits in a big chair with a glass of whiskey and tells often humorous stories of his time playing in the NHL. He's featured stories on players like P.K. Subban and Claude Lemieux, as well as well-known hockey figures such as Lou Lamoriello.
Gomez also posts several recipes and photos and videos of his life as an outdoorsman, including one where he's hanging out with some bears.
Not all hockey fans will have fond memories of Gomez. He was a bonafide star during his time with the New Jersey Devils, scoring north of 80 points twice and winning the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year. Things started going downhill rapidly after he was traded from the New York Rangers to the Montreal Canadiens. After his first season with the team in 2009-10, he would never hit the 50 point mark in the NHL again, going as low as just 11 points in 38 games in 2011-12 when the Habs bought him out of his contract. Gomez would hang around the NHL for another few seasons, suiting up for San Jose, Florida, New Jersey (again), St. Louis and finally Ottawa before deciding to retire. After that, he spent a couple of seasons as an assistant coach with the New York Islanders before leaving hockey altogether. In addition to his Instagram account, he also has a YouTube show entitled, "Scotty's House" that first premiered on July 30, 2020. This series focuses on Gomez having adventures in his house in Alaska.
