The Calgary Flames have had a tough time over the past 18 months, losing Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk, while taking a major step back, and it's exposed a big issue for the organization.

Playing in Canada?

For years now, many players have opted away from signing in Canada, with a perfect example being Radko Gudas this summer, as the taxes, media pressure, scrutiny and weather all play a role in that.

Now, many Canadian teams are losing out on big names in free agency, and one of the Flames top players has now opened up on the struggles, especially with Calgary.

A beloved newcomer

Mackenzie Weegar was acquired by the team last summer, and came into his own with the team late in the year, and now he's revealed his true feelings on playing in Calgary, and the struggles of finding players that want to play north of the border.

There's lots of rumors of guys not wanting to be here or guys staying. To be honest, I kind of keep my head out of it and my nose out of it. I just want guys that want to be here.

For the most part, Weegar is keeping away from the whispers that people are staying away from the Flames, and focusing on those that want to be there.

For me, the turnover, it doesn't really affect me," Weegar said. "All that matters is the guys that want to be here and guys that want to win here in Calgary, and if you don't want to be a part of it, unfortunately, you have to move on even if they're great friends and great guys. For me, you want to win, and I think we want to win now. It starts with Craig and Husk at the helm.

Ultimately, the Flames have a solid team, but with six pending UFA's on the current roster, the Flames front office now need to find players that want to play for the team, and with some potential trade candidates like Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm, they'll be hoping to find that in the coming months.
