Alexander Ovechkin is regarded as one of the best players in NHL history, and could one day become the league's greatest ever goal scorer, but his road hasn't been without its hardships.
A devastating loss
When he was young, Ovechkin tragically lost his brother Sergei at 24-years of age after complications with a car crash, and he remains Ovi's hero to this day, even naming his first son after his brother.
Before he passed however, Alex revealed a promise he made to the man that introduced him to hockey and inspired him to get to where he is today.
Promise fulfilled
That promise was that he would make it to the NHL and eventually win the Stanley Cup in his honour, and after he did just that back in 2018, he famously took the Cup to Sergei's grave and said to him "we did it brother".
Ovi also kisses his glove and points to the sky every time he scores in honour of Sergei, and now he finds himself just 72 goals behind Wayne Gretzky for the NHL all-time lead in goals, which would be an incredible honour for Alex, Sergei and the entire family.
