REPORT: Western Conference Team To Offer Sheet Alexis Lafreniere

The New York Rangers have been notorious for mishandling their top prospects in recent years. No player comes to mind more in this discussion than Alexis Lafreniere. Lafreniere was seen as a generational talent when drafted and now could be on his way out of New York.

The New York Rangers have been a contending team for the last couple of seasons after getting top picks in the 2019 and 2020 NHL Drafts. However, their immediate success has led to stunted growth of their prospects. This has also led to salary cap issues as their top prospects are now coming up on their second contracts. Currently, the New York Rangers are shown as having 2.78 million dollars in cap space. This leaves them incredibly vulnerable to a potential offer sheet of star prospect Alexis Lafreniere.

The San Jose Sharks are a team in the middle of a full rebuild. They recently selected Will Smith fourth overall and have a prospect pool of young players. They also have one other thing many teams do not and that is cap space. With Erik Karlsson likely to be moved soon they will have ample space to go and make an offer sheet to Lafreniere. In this case, they would have to offer just over four million dollars which would also require them to provide their second-round pick this year to the Rangers as compensation. This is very possible for San Jose to pull off if they believe Lafreniere's all-star potential is still there.

While an offer sheet is never the most likely solution to a team with little cap space and restricted free agents it was recently pulled off by the Carolina Hurricanes when they signed Jesperi Kotkaniemi from the Montreal Canadiens.
