Today, CBC released an article analyzing MLSE's debt with the city of Toronto that totals over $1 million. MLSE has disputed the charge but there is lots of work to be done before they go debt free once again.
The dispute happened because of of BMO Field, where Toronto F.C. plays. The field was previously exempt from taxes but in 2018 that changed and they started taxing the field again.
Since 2018, they have accrued over $1 million in debt due to the unpaid taxes. With MLSE fighting this case, they have faith that they will be able to resolve the issue. It is not a question of if they can pay it but more of if they should pay it.
